Spring Break!!

I'm back safe and sound from spring break!! I went to Thessaloniki, Athens, and Mykonos via train and ferry for a grand total of nearly 80 hours in transit. Totally worth it!!! There is absolutely no way for me to give a play by play, and I should be doing homework so here are some of my favorite pictures to tide you over.

Zu Hause und in der Stadt

 These photos don't quite fit in with the weekend excursions cataloged in other posts but I wanted to share them nonetheless. First more bread! This is Sportler-Brot which is so far my favorite. Next up is Bio Roggen Pur or Rye bread. It is more mild than the rye I've had before. This is Dinkel Chia, it was good but didn't stand out particularly. Some stores stick a paper label directly on the loaf which is the white stuff in this picture. Finally we have Familien Brot, another whole wheat loaf. It was longer than the others so perhaps that's where it gets the name. I'm not just eating sandwiches though. A couple weeks ago I attempted Schwäbische Linsen mit Spätzle, which is a South German lentil dish served with traditional noodles. Here's the work in progress. Deutsches Museum

 The weather forecast for Saturday of the long easter weekend called for rain so I booked a ticket for the Deutsches Museum  which is billed as the largest science and technology museum in the world. It does have its own island which you may remember as the location for my covid test to break quarantine. Like the Nymphenburg palace grounds the Deutsches Museum also has an app which I started out by promptly ignoring and checking out the Mine exhibit.  As you can see the exhibit is styled as a replica cave with scale replicas representing different types of mining. They did keep things to scale as seen by this doorway. I appreciated the coal mining section, having visited an actual coal mine in Pennsylvania. The exhibit did an excellent job capturing the claustrophobia (though perhaps my photography did not). The machine room representing more modern mines even smelled like a machine shop which I assume is realistic. Once out of the mines I opted to actually follow the App...

The Final Countdown

I doubt anyone is still reading this, but I need a break from Mathematica so I thought I'd try writing some plain English for a change. We've been in Corvallis now for 4 weeks, and aside from one trip back to Quartz Creek I've been doing my work here, either in the library or memorial union. Earlier this week the other two members of my group Will and Ginger went out to Crab-Tree Creek on the Santiam to finish the last of our data gathering. I opted not to go for two main reasons, one the StreamPro (The ADCP actually designed for shallow water) can be easily operated by two people, and two I already had plenty of work to do. For the last 4 weeks I've been using Mathematica to visualize and analyze our data. It may not be the best tool for the job, but I know how to use it. Essentially what I do is read in text files of data from WinRiver (the program that comes with the ADCP), process them into a usable format, then use them to make pretty pictures.
