Friedhofstour

Perhaps I'll run out of arbitrary destinations to bike to, but certainly not anytime soon. This weekend the theme was  cemeteries. Though I walk through the one by my apartment on a regular basis I have not done more than bike by the other cemeteries in the city. I set out to change that, starting with the  Ostfriedhof .  Initially I went around into a maintenance yard but eventually found my way into the cemetery proper. This cemetery is much larger and more park like than the Alter Südfriedhof by me. The other big difference is that it is still in use, meaning that the people buried here have living relatives who come and tend the gravesites. There were plenty of people (mostly older) out doing just that. To aid them most of the path junctions included racks of communal watering cans. There were some non traditional grave markers including this one which caught my eye. After making a loop I retrieved my bike and headed onwards to the new southern cemetery,  Neuer Südfriedhof . Th

Now that it says light fairly late here I've take to taking more sunset strolls around the city. The city has a different during twilight and even more so after dark. Plus some things just look cooler when they're all lit up. Take for example  St. Lukas . Maximilianeum I spent a while out front trying to catch a tram at just the right spot. This is the closest I managed. Looking down from the bridge I was impressed at how clear the water was, you can even make out a few fish! The next weekend I went out a bit earlier and in a slightly different direction. The reflection on the rails made for some cool photos. Of course the church here (Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche) was illuminated as well. There was even an alcove under the main spire which had glowing bread and wine Now that the 10pm curfew is back in place it may be a little while before I get a chance to take more night photos.

With sunshine in the forecast I decided it was again time for a train trip to the countryside for some disc golf. I'd been periodically checking Udisc since some of the (relatively) nearby courses are seasonal or limited access. In particular the course at  Schwabmünchen  had been removed due to Covid then recently reopened. The train trip to Schwabmünchen from Munich requires a transfer which can take place in Buchloe or Augsburg which made finding tickets a little more of a challenge. Eventually though, I found the trains that were included as part of a single day regional ticket. Once again I started my day at the main Munich train station on tracks 26+ With each train trip the countryside gets greener and greener. I assume this will last longer than it does in California and the hills won't turn brown until the fall. My transfer at Buchloe was uneventful since I had 15 minutes and there are only 4 platforms. Once I arrived in Schwabmünchen I made my way across town to the p

Another weekend another bike excursion. First though, I started out the morning with coffee and breakfast from the coffee shop next door. I detoured through the cemetery on my way home to pick up my bike. More and more of the trees are in bloom a sure reminder spring is here. Once I'd retrieved my bike I headed north after first crossing over to the eastern shore of the river. The first landmark I photographed was the Friedensengel  which commemorates 25 years of peace since the 1870 Franco German war.  Continuing north I arrived at the Isarwehr Oberföhring which is one in a series of dams on the Isar. This one diverts the Isar into two separate channels and contains a small power station as well. Importantly for my purposes it is a great place for a view back south down the Isar. I followed the eastern fork out towards where it opened up into a reservoir. My stopping point also included a good view of the S8 train line, though I did have to sit around for 10 minutes to get a good

Once again Sunday was forecasted to have the better weather for excursions. My previous train trips I used Deutsche Bahn regional tickets so this weekend I decided use the S-bahn. This has the advantage of being slightly cheaper and a slightly closer station. In need of a destination I decided on the disc golf course in the town of  Peißenberg . Getting there would require a train ride to the end of the line at Tutzing then biking the rest of the way. Biking isn't particularly conducive to photography so here's one of the first pictures I took, just before my route turned almost due west. Despite the overcast the ride was quite pleasant, going through a number of small towns. Once I reached the golf course I played through it fairly quickly, it wasn't particularly scenic. On the hill above though there was an excellent view. For variety's sake took a different route back which felt fairly remote even though I still saw people every 10 minutes or so. The alps were a con

These photos don't quite fit in with the weekend excursions cataloged in other posts but I wanted to share them nonetheless. First more bread! This is Sportler-Brot which is so far my favorite. Next up is Bio Roggen Pur or Rye bread. It is more mild than the rye I've had before. This is Dinkel Chia, it was good but didn't stand out particularly. Some stores stick a paper label directly on the loaf which is the white stuff in this picture. Finally we have Familien Brot, another whole wheat loaf. It was longer than the others so perhaps that's where it gets the name. I'm not just eating sandwiches though. A couple weeks ago I attempted Schwäbische Linsen mit Spätzle, which is a South German lentil dish served with traditional noodles. Here's the work in progress. I used store bought dried Spätzle to make things easier and it turned out quite well. On the sightseeing front here's a view across the Isar of St. Maximilian. The ducks in the river originally attra
